Stuart Tibaweswa - 2017 Young Photographer Award Winner

Stuart Tibaweswa - 2017 Young Photographer Award Winner

Many young people in Uganda are interested in documentary photography, but they often lack the tools or guidance to develop. Established in 2016, the Young Photographer Award is targeted at early-career photographers between 18 and 25 years old.

The Young Photographer Award is geared toward young Ugandans interested in cultivating a career in photojournalism or documentary photography. This award is developmental as such requires for any participant to have a body of work that they can share with a panel of judges, along with a concept note for a project they wish to see come to bare and motivational letter. The judges review all the items to come to a decision about the winner.

The 2017 Young Photographer Award winner is Stuart Tibaweswa.

Stuart wins a Canon sponsored EOS 1300D kit, courtesy of Canon Central & North Africa, as well as a chance to participate in an intensive 6 months mentorship programme under the guidance of an established professional photographer.

The 2016 edition’s winner, Esther Mbabazi, worked under the supervision of Anne Ackermann on a documentary photography project during a 6-month mentorship programme. Her work, titled “This Time We Are Young”, is presented in this year’s exhibition.

The two runners–up, Lutaaya Roy and Ampaire Edgar, were mentored by Frederic Noy and Jiro Ose respectively.
